Hypnosis is a powerful tool to reprogram the subconscious mind for positive, beneficial change. It works by reprogramming the subconscious with positive suggestions and beliefs. Once these beliefs have been changed, or revised, new behaviors begin to appear in the person.

I have personally witnessed the power of hypnosis in my life and in the lives of my clients. These changes are being made directly on the subconscious mind which is responsible for all of our behaviors. The field of psychology is based upon this principle. Psychology was initially based on the theories of hypnosis, but Freud didn’t like the long inductions, so he chose to use more conscious methods and repetition to access the subconscious mind. Both psychology and hypnosis have their place as psychology is best suited to severe mental issues, such as war trauma, psychosis and the like, while hypnosis is ideal for vocational and avocational issues like confidence, self-esteem, speaking in public, and quitting smoking.

You may wonder if hypnosis works for everyone. Hypnosis does work for everyone. Results will be achieved, but each person is different, and it might take one person a couple more sessions than another to see the changes. How long? Hypnosis sessions range from 4 – 10 sessions on average. This is much faster than every other method.

Just like the creation of the universe has an associated theory to explain how we got here, Hypnosis utilizes a theory of the mind to explain how hypnosis works.

The mind is composed of two sections, a conscious and an subconscious. The conscious part of the mind makes up 12%, while the subconscious part makes up 88%. The subconscious mind is responsible for our behavior patterns and our beliefs about life, the world and ourselves. Our conscious mind, the part of us we believe to be living in 100% of the time, is the part that rationalizes, criticizes and analyzes everything in our lives. It’s the judge, but really has no control over our lives. Think of it as a 120 pound person wrestling an 880 pound person. Without trying, the 880 pound person will always win because the 120 pound person could never be strong enough to shift 880 pounds.

So, we know we need to access the subconscious mind to get positive suggestions to it. it’s also obvious that maybe we have mistakenly labeled the subconscious mind and that we are actually living through it at every moment. Then if our subconscious mind is that open, we should have no problem reprogramming it with positive suggestions. But it isn’t that easy.

You have to overcome the critical factor of the conscious mind in order to insert positive suggestions into the subconscious mind. The job of the critical factor is to bounce out all positive ideas. Meanwhile, negative thoughts and ideas are typically allowed to access our subconscious mind. This may appear odd at first glance, but it is actually evolution and survival of the fittest at work.

All animals must be pessimistic to survive. When you watch nature shows you see this in action. Small animals like prairie dogs and gophers, rabbits and moles spend a long time by the entrance to their burrows. Ever wonder why? If they notice any danger, they can just pop back into their burrow where it is safe. Animals evolved over the eons to be naturally cautions and pessimistic. The strong, and cautious survive.

Humans, in fact all animals in nature, developed, evolved to predominately be negative and pessimistic. This was vital for our survival. Positive thoughts were likely to get us killed. We learned to not eat just any fruit or mushroom. So positive thoughts were criticized by the conscious mind and ended up being bounced out. Negative thoughts however, took a different path. Negative thoughts have life saving possibilities because they keep us from doing things we shouldn’t or make us afraid and run whether something is good or bad. That’s why today, many people are anxious and fearful of life. They are patterned in their DNA to respond negatively to all of life’s situations and they react instinctively in a negative, pessimistic way.

Conscious people do not usually tend to accept positive suggestions. Even if I said to a woman, “That blouse looks nice on you” she would think “what’s his motive?” There has to be a motive! Again, almost all positive statements are kicked out by the conscious mind. But in a state of hypnosis, positive suggestions are more easily accepted as fact and positive changes can then take place.

Hypnosis is a major tool for transformation because of this reason. Our conscious mind will prevent all positive suggestions from entering our subconscious while fully conscious. When we are in a semi-conscious state known as somnambulism, the critical factor of our conscious mind is out of the way and the hypnotist can speak directly to the subconscious mind and then positive, beneficial changes take place.
